Hale School year 11 student, Tim Delborello is a community minded individual who values building human connections with people to create a positive change in society.

“Active citizenship is based on community involvement, helping around wherever you can and making sure everyone gets what they need,” Tim said.

Tim recently organised for Hale Schools Redfoot Youth Theatre to attend the Ronald McDonald House in Nedlands and sing songs from their upcoming musical, Avenue Q for the children.

“I wanted to bring music into the house because it is a sure way to get people in a good mood, it also acts as an icebreaker to break any awkwardness for the kids,” Tim said.

The Hale School service learning programme has given Tim a glimpse of the potential he has to make changes for the better.

The programme develops student’s resilience, empathy and their sense of duty to others. Through this programme, Tim is involved in the Starlight Foundation and the Ronald McDonald house charity.

Tim’s older brother, James said Tim takes pride in being a community figure and engaging with organisations such as starlight and Ronald McDonald House.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill children. Tim attends the Starlight express room, which is a medical free zone where the kids can go and play games without the stress of treatment and medical talk.

“The children get something special out of it, you’re making someone’s day,” Tim said.

He also volunteered at a fundraiser to collect money for the Starlight Foundation at the Fremantle Dockers football game.

The Other Foundation Tim volunteers at is the Ronald McDonald House Charity in Perth. The House is an independent charity providing free accommodation to the families of seriously ill children living 100 kilometres out of the city while their children are being treated at nearby hospitals.

Tim attends the Ronald McDonald house every Wednesday afternoon to look after and connect with the kids.

“One child was in the isolation ward and one of our hale students was able to visit him which made him so happy, he needed that human interaction,” Tim said
